Truly, there had been so many debates and arguments on the topic of which book came into existence first. Some claimed that the Bible is much older than the Quran while the people in support of the Quran said the bible was faulty and could not be used any longer which is why the Quran was given and thus, the Quran came first.
Every believer has supports for their claims which makes it hard to debunk some points given. It was expected that this argument would be over but it continues. We have seen many Christian apologists tackle questions that come from the people of other religion, it is also true that Christian apologetics is done with the other religion, Islam. Should anyone ask what the book came first?
Which was the first, the Bible or the Quran?
Before answering, one should also ask, which religion came first? If Christianity came first, then they must have been using a Holy book. That is the Bible. The Bible should have been in existence even before the birth of Islam.
The Bible Was Written
The similarity between both books is that the believers both believed that these books came from God. one came directly from God and the other came through the inspiration of God, i.e. God inspired some men, His servants to sit and write the things that He wants to be in the book. Some of these writings came as a result of the vision that the authors were shown. Anytime God opens the eyes of these prophets or anyone who is not a prophet, He says, “write.”
“And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;”
Revelation 3:14 KJV
We can see this all through the part where John was asked to write to the Churches, the seven churches in the book of Revelation. It not only in the book of Revelation that we can see that God instructed His people to write, but He instructed them in some other parts too.
“And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.”
Habakkuk 2:2 KJV
There were some things that God showed His servants and ordered them not to write it because it is not yet time that people know that particular information that was given. God showed Daniel a vision but told Him to shut it.
“But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.”
Daniel 12:4 KJV
The Quran Written
The existence of the Quran is similar to this; it came through a revelation. According to the distinguished scholar of Hadith in Islamic history, Imam Mohammed Al-Bukhari, the Quran was given to Prophet Mohammed, a man that could not read nor write. The angel went to him and asked him to read but he couldn’t. he forced to read like three times. The prophet kept telling the angel that he could not tread.
“Recite in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Recite, and your Lord is the Most Generous. Who taught by the pen. Taught man that which he knew not”
Quran 96:1-5
In chapter 97 (AL-QADR), the time when the Quran was sent to the prophet Mohammed was given. The angels and the spirit came down with the permission of the Lord, they came to give the words.
“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace is until the emergence of dawn.
Quran 97:1-5
The Origin of the Bible and the Quran
The Bible was written by different authors and thus, it was divided into two different parts. The major division is the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament was further divided. Originally, it was divided into three which is the Torah, Nevi’im, and the Ketuvim. These three divisions gave the name of the Hebrew Bible which is TaNaKh.
The Torah
The Torah is considered to be the books of Moses which have five books in it. this opens the Bible, the first five books are called the Torah (The Pentateuch). These books were dated to be written around the 9th century BCE. The Nevi’im is the second division of the Old Testament which is also called the Prophets. There were former prophets, the prophets that came after Moses.
The books of the former prophets are Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings. The latter prophets came at the end of the Tanakh, they were also divided into two. The major prophets and the minor prophets. The last is the Ketuvim. All of the books in the Tanakh were not complete until around 2nd century BCE. All of these had been written before Christ was born.
The New Testament
The New Testament then follows after the death of Jesus. The complete version of the New Testament was found in the 4th century. The Bible had been completed and combined to be the Old Testament and the New Testament before the Quran was given. The bible was assembled by St. Jerome around 400 AD.
The books of the New Testament were written in from 50AD to 90AD. This just a few years after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Quran is believed to have been given to Prophet Mohammed by angel Gabriel in the early 600 AD. It took Him about 23 years to gather all the books from the angel. This is about 200 years after the assemblage of the Holy Bible.
There is no doubt that the Bible has been in existence before the Quran. This should not cause any form of argument because the years which they were written are different and the Bible comes first. The main reason why people take the Quran as the first book and not the Bible is because of the time of translation.
Which was the first, the Bible or the Quran?
Starting with the first translation, the Wycliffe’s Bible which might not have been completely translated was translated in 1382. Some people believed that was when the first bible was made. Some even look at the year of Tyndale’s translation which was printed in 1526.
If going by this, the year the Quran was translated into English is 1734. The English translation of the Bible is not the first bible. The question is not to be debated upon after the date of which each of the holy books was produced has been mentioned.
